Social Action Facilitation Team

(terms of reference)

replacing terms of reference approved March 13, 2006

accepted in principle by KUF Board, March 2, 2009

Purpose

The purpose of the Social Action Facilitation Team shall be to foster an environment where social responsibility flourishes. The team shall identify possible supportive approaches for Social Action to the KUF Board of Directors that are in concert with the Social Action Policy.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Social Action Facilitation Team shall be a Special Committee that reports to the KUF Board of Directors through the designated Board Liaison. It shall have at least two members, who are identified by the Board from the congregation at large and are Voting Members of KUF. The Minister, President and Board Liaison shall be ex-officio non-voting members with open invitation to participate in meetings or discussions.   [this committee will be considered “experimental” and evaluated after one year]

The Social Action Facilitation Team shall be responsible for:

1.      Facilitating better understanding of how members can link with one another to increase understandings, share passions, and explore options for action.

2.      Directing individual members to relevant information in KUF mission, budget, policies, especially Screening in Faith, Privacy, Social Action, Welcoming Congregation and Green Sanctuary, as well as Canadian Unitarian Council resolutions, UUA resolutions etc.

3.      Promoting responsible interaction and respectful dialogue, including links with KUF Committees that may have overlapping interests, for example, Adult RE, Sunday Services or Membership and Community Building Committees.

4.      Clarifying that no individual is able to speak for the congregation on social action issues, but there is a process for KUF to assist (e.g. use of facilities) or eventually endorse (vote of the congregation) particular actions,  (see Social Action Policy #6).

5.      Acting as a contact point for members and friends who are concerned, curious or passionate about particular issues of social responsibility.

6.      Receiving and reviewing initiatives from other organizations in the community and to consider informing individuals and groups within KUF who may be interested.

7.      Proposing ways in which KUF can provide a more nurturing environment for social responsibility interests and nurturing options for networking.

8.      Developing an inventory of optimal methods for sharing information with the congregation, including KUFLinks, Social Action email, Social Responsibility bulletin boards, and Sunday Service mini-reports, and assessing the effectiveness of available options.

9.      Exploring the need for a Covenant of Good Relations to guide interaction within the congregation, including on issues of social responsibility, whether contentious or not.

Reporting

The Social Action Facilitation Team shall be responsible for:

1. Reporting periodically to the KUF Board on social responsibility topics and themes that have emerged from members, and offering recommendations relating to social responsibility to the KUF Board

2. Preparing a report for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to summarize activities in social responsibility during the year and recommendations which have been forwarded to the KUF Board of Directors.

Quorum

Two members of the Team constitute a quorum. Ex-officio members shall be involved in reviewing issues on which the Team makes recommendations to the KUF Board.

Budget

The annual budget shall be determined by the Board of Directors and the congregation each year.
